I would second the recommendation to stay around Barrett Parkway. It's a nice suburban area and you will find several places to shop and eat. It's also close to the Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park, if you're interested in Civil War history.
My family is driving down to Florida from Kansas. Because of the long drive, we decided to stop in Atlanta, GA for the night.
